Unspoilt Krabi - something impossible? Not at all. But don't say it anybody! Only a five minutes boat ride from Krabi town you arrive in a different world, far away from the tourist masses in Thailand. "Koh Klang is one of the few areas in Krabi where floral Batik sarongs still remain more prevalent than candy-coloured bikinis and Speedos", writes Bangkok Post. Indeed, the only resort on the island is asking the guests not to walk around in Bikinis and hotpants, to be respectful towards the muslim community inhabiting the island. There are nearly no cars – we saw only one -, just motorbikes, Tuk Tuks and bicycles. In the four villages live about 5000 people, mostly Muslims who rely on fishing and rice farming. The island with the Andaman sea to the South is the birthplace of the Ruea Hua Ton Boat, the longtail boat, that is constructed here, and also well known for Sangyod Rice which is grown only in Koh Klang and Pattalung. This rice has a distinctive salty flavour because of the salinity of Koh Klang’s soi. Koh Klang is a combination of mangroves and rice fields, with goats and water buffalo grazing in the fields. A sand beach you find nearly on the whole southern coast, but not suitable for swimming.

Islanda Eco Village Resort: Do not await a limousine taking you to this resort, await a longtail boat, to cross Krabi River from Thara pier in Krabi. Then you change into a motorbike-sidecar. During a twenty-minutes sometimes bumpy ride a cross a narrow street nearly to the southeast end of the island you pass villages and many peoples smiles, ricefields, mangroves, buffalos and geese. And then you arrive at this very well maintained oasis with a palmgarden as well as a garden with vegetables and spices, around 30 rooms in bungalow-villas on stilts, an infinity pool and an excellent kitchen. And from the verandas of the beachfront villas you enjoy the tranquility and the panorama of the Amdaman sea with limestone islands like Koh Kai (Chicken Island), for which Krabi is famous. And you know you will see a magical sunset.

"We stumbled on some delicious khanom jak, a mix of rice flour and coconut placed in long coconut husks and grilled to a crispy brown. You also might come across sarim (mung bean “noodles” in icy coconut milk) and khao tom mut (rice flour and banana or other fillings steamed in banana leaf)", notes travelfish.org.

Since the early 2000s the group has been making models of the longtail boats as a souvenir representing the province of Krabi.

Birdwatching: The island is a prime birdwatching destination, with graceful herons and sea eagles continually swooping over the fields, writes travelfish.org. "If you’re lucky, you might also spot a rare Chinese egret. Far less effort is required to glimpse one of the red-headed bulbuls that, as in much of Southern Thailand, are prized for their melodic songs".
Mangrove forest: You can arrange longtailboats, that take you alongside the roots and bushy lime-green leaves. Or you rent a Kayak.
How you arrive at Ko Klang
From Chao Fah pier in Krabi you walk south along the riverside promenade for a few hundred metres. Past the marina in Thara Park you find a floating pier, from where boats run to the island. From here or Chao Fah pier you can also book private crossings.
